Day 17 - Omkeshwar to Burhanpur - Food poisoning sets in

Day 17 and things have gone awry with the tour group. Yesterday, people started getting sick out on the ride in the morning, by lunch time 2 people had hopped in the van to ride back to the hotel. By the time we all got to the hotel people started falling like flies. By the end of it 14 out of 20 riders had come down with food poisoning plus 2 of the tour coordinators.

So many people did not ride today they had to hire three taxis to transport us to the hotel.

I spent much of last night in the bathroom, along with most of the rest of the group having the same experience, so no riding today for me and most of the tour group. Right now the smell of Indian food churns my stomach.

Only 3 out of 6 people finished the ride today. This was the Queen stage of our tour. For those of you who don’t know what the queen stage is, it’s the most difficult stage of a multi-day race, often featuring the most challenging climbs. It did prove to be most difficult because of the distance of 88.48 miles with 2,959 feet of climbing and the soaring high temperatures in the mid 90s.

I’m not sure if I will ride tomorrow, or when I will ride again. I’m honestly feeling pretty burned out and have little to no desire to ride my bike with the combination of saddle sores, temps soaring in the mid-90’s by the afternoon. For me this is extremely rough riding. I’m just going to accept this for what it is and do what works for me at this point. We have another rest day coming up after tomorrow.

I’m glad I came on the trip, it’s been a great experience, however I realize this is too much for me, there is too much riding, difficult riding. I don’t think I will ever do another long tour like this again. There has to be something between the VBT (Vermont Bicycling Tours) and this big long tour. I think my limit is about two weeks. But, you know what they say, this is how you find out about these things.

I don’t regret coming, but I am going to be really happy when this is over, lol 😝

  4. Erin…thanks for detailed updates. Food poisoning is no fun. I seem susceptible to it and know it well, so I’m wishing you all the best in hastily recovering. Greedily, however, I’m glad for all the pics you take with the bit of extra down time you have had. Sending you and Jackie good vibes. Jo Layne
